Medway, Kent

A bakery in Kent that bakes for you, not for a shelf

Kongwa Bakes is a family bakery in Medway. Everything is made to order for the person who ordered it. Nothing is baked ahead for a shelf, nothing is sold down over a week, and nothing sits in a warehouse. Order by the Thursday and collect on the Saturday between 8am and midday, or have it delivered free across Medway on orders over £20.00.

Where we deliver and collect

Each of these has its own page, because a bakery in Strood is a different proposition from one in Rainham and pretending otherwise helps nobody.

What makes it different from supermarket bread

Slow fermentation, and time. A supermarket sourdough is often made in a few hours with added yeast and flavouring to imitate what a long ferment does on its own. Ours takes days, because that is how long the process takes when you do not shortcut it. It is also why we need your order by the Thursday rather than the night before.

If you want to understand what is actually happening in the dough, we wrote it up properly in our sourdough guides.

Feeding more than a family

Weddings, christenings, wakes, office mornings and birthdays across Medway and the rest of Kent. Our catering and events side builds a menu around your day and prices it properly, rather than selling you a fixed package that half fits.

Common questions

Where in Kent do you deliver?
Across Medway: Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood and Rainham, plus the villages inside the Medway boundary. We check your postcode against the real local authority boundary at checkout rather than guessing from the postcode prefix, because ME7 and ME8 both run across more than one district.
Can I order from elsewhere in Kent?
Yes, for collection. Anyone can order and collect from Medway on a Saturday morning, wherever they live. Delivery is the part limited to Medway, because it is the family driving, not a courier.
Why is it Saturdays only?
Because it is a family bakery rather than a shop with staff. One handover a week, done properly, means everything is made for you and genuinely fresh on the day you get it, instead of being baked ahead and sold down over a week.
How far ahead do I need to order?
Order by the Thursday for that Saturday. Anything later rolls to the following week, and the checkout tells you which Saturday you are ordering for before you pay.
